Ironman European Championships: Sabotage at the Ironman European Championships? State security is investigating in Hamburg

After a suspected act of sabotage at the Ironman European Championships in Hamburg, the State Security Office of the State Criminal Police Office is investigating, among other things, suspicions of attempted grievous bodily harm and damage to property in several cases. The Hamburg police announced this one day after the major triathlon event.

According to current findings, unknown persons have scattered small metal shavings on the road on several streets in the Kirchwerder district. Numerous racing bikes were damaged while traveling through this part of the route.

Participant falls and has to go to hospital

According to police, at least one 29-year-old Ironman participant fell in this section, suffered a fracture and had to be taken to hospital. Whether the tire damage was also the cause of the fall is “the subject of police investigations,” as the statement states.

The Hamburg police are now looking for witnesses who made suspicious observations in Kirchwerder. This also applies to the evening and the night before the race.
