Fuel prices: diesel cheaper, gasoline more expensive

Diesel cost in May an average of 1,916 euros and was with it 9.3 cents cheaper than in April. At the Gasoline price There was an opposite development: The liter cost 1,799 euros in May and thus eight cents more than the month before. That shows one Fuel price analysis by the ÖAMTC.

Long-term observations by the mobility club show that this trend is by no means new: In recent years, prices have often varied from May to late summer and petrol became more expensive more quickly or cheaper than diesel more slowly.

A possible explanation: The sharp increase in public holiday and vacation traffic with private cars at this time leads to higher demand for gasoline – an effect that occurs with diesel due to the constant demand, e.g. B. due to transport, is not so important.

Reduction of the fuel price brake

The government extended the fuel price cap for June, albeit in a weaker form. Only the mineral oil tax will now be reduced by 1.7 cents per liter (valid until the end of June); there is no longer any limit on the margins. Gas stations must also pass on price reductions in international price quotations by the end of August.

The ÖAMTC points out that the price brake has been greatly reduced, which was evident at the petrol pumps: the prices at the petrol stations rose by five cents per liter compared to May 31st.

Fuel tips

According to the automobile club, the cheapest time to fill up is usually on the weekend. As the day progresses, prices fall to just under the one-time permitted price increase at 12 p.m. Overall, the cheapest prices can be expected on Monday morning.

Detailed evaluations by the Federal Competition Authority also showed that the daily price increase at 12 p.m. was then greatly reduced until around 7 p.m. If you can’t fill up in the morning, you should wait until the evening if possible to get a better time.
