The USA has refused entry to the referee Omar Artan from Somalia, who was scheduled to take part in the World Cup. The Border Patrol agency (CBP) determined that a traveler from Somalia, “a FIFA World Cup referee, was ineligible to enter due to security clearance concerns and was denied entry,” it said in a statement. Artan was not named but is the only World Cup referee from Somalia. FIFA did not initially respond to a dpa inquiry about the rejection.
According to the information, Artan wanted to enter the USA from Istanbul on Saturday in Miami. A further review was deemed necessary. Each entry permit is a case-by-case decision and CBP officers have the authority to question, search and make decisions on travelers in accordance with U.S. law.
In an Al Jazeera article published on Monday, Artan spoke about his excitement about the World Cup. “It is a great honor for me to be the first Somali to be there,” he said. “I hope I’ll be fantastic there.”
Iraqi striker is questioned for hours
It had previously become known that Iraqi striker Aymen Hussein was questioned for several hours by the border guard when he tried to enter the USA in Chicago on Friday.
“Following screening, a traveler was permitted entry into the United States,” CBP said, according to The Athletic. “The second traveler, a photographer and not a team player, was deemed ineligible due to security screening concerns and was refused entry.”
