Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported that inspections carried out by federal, state and port authorities have found no indication that the oily stain detected on June 2 in Manzanillo Bay is related to the company’s infrastructure.
According to the oil company, during the land, sea and air tours carried out on June 4 and 5, no operational failures or leaks were detected in its facilities. “No operational anomalies, leaks or evidence were identified that would allow us to establish, so far, a relationship between Pemex’s infrastructure and the events observed in the bay,” he said in a statement.
He explained that the work carried out in coordination with the Secretariats of the Navy, Environment and Natural Resources, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection, the Security, Energy and Environment Agency, the Asipona Manzanillo, Civil Protection and state authorities allowed the recovery of the material observed in the area.
He indicated that now the work is focused on the review and monitoring of environmental conditions and on investigations to determine the origin of the substance.
They clean and analyze the health of the environment
In addition, the oil company stated that it participates in the cleanup actions by supplying containment barriers, absorbent material and other equipment to prevent the dispersion of the material in the bay.
“Pemex participates in mitigation and cleaning actions by supplying containment barriers, oleophilic cords, absorbent material and other resources, in coordination with the participating authorities that follow up on the investigations to determine the origin of the material,” he noted.
The State company added that the Navy filed a complaint with the competent authorities with the purpose of carrying out the corresponding investigations and, where appropriate, determining responsibilities for the hydrocarbon spill in the Manzanillo tourist dock.
Meanwhile, the Administration of the National Port System of Manzanillo maintains permanent surveillance and supervision tours in the area to follow up on the case.
“Pemex reiterates its commitment to the protection of the environment, the safety of its operations and institutional collaboration to attend to this event.”
