Earthquake in the Philippines leaves 41 dead and patients are treated outdoors

Many injured people were treated outdoors in stifling heat this Tuesday, after the strong earthquake that shook the south of Filipinas and left at least 41 dead and thousands displaced.

According to provincial sources contacted by AFP, the death toll from the earthquake this Tuesday amounts to 41.

The previous count was at least 35 dead.

Near a hospital in General Santos, the largest city in the region, AFP journalists heard medical staff caring for a woman who was giving birth outdoorsbefore the cries of the newborn could be heard.

In the area of Clearwhere a landslide buried homes and left at least 13 dead, a hospital source indicated that More than 60 patients were being treated on the street for fear of aftershocks.

“The hospital suffered extensive damage,” declared an employee of the establishment. The mayor’s office “decided that we could not use the building.”

In General Santos, rescue teams resumed searches after a night pause to try to locate two employees of a grocery store whose roof collapsed.

AFP reporters saw rescue dogs and their handlers sniffing around piles of cement and twisted metal bars.

Nearby, at a beachfront hotel, a Coast Guard vessel patrolled the waters in search of two missing people.

Monday’s earthquake caused extensive damage and scenes of panic, documented in multiple videos.

In one of them, spread on social networks and verified by AFP, a shopping center in General Santos is seen collapsing.

The quake led to evacuation orders in coastal areas of the southern Philippines and neighboring Indonesia, and triggered tsunami warnings in several countries before they were lifted.
