“I believe the time has come to open a new phase: more dialogue, more listening, more mutual responsibility“: this is the message that the president of Lazio, Claudio Lotitoaddressed the fans in one open letter published in the Messaggero. “I also want a stronger, more competitive Lazio. I also want a Lazio capable of winning”, assured the Biancoceleste owner, addressing the supporters who joined the protest against society.
The balance between sustainability and ambition
“But the sustainability is not the opposite of ambition“, Lotito observed, “is the most serious way to give her a future. The criticism is legitimate. The protest is part of the history of football and the freedom of fans. But the discussion must remain within a framework of respect, truth and responsibility. I always thought that the Lazio should remain master of its own destiny. This was, is and will remain a fundamental line. The first duty of those who manage a club is not to chase one day’s applause. It is to ensure that that society remains solid, free and respected tomorrow too. I ask that the judgment takes into account the whole picture, not just the most emotional or most convenient part of the story.”
Apologies for the telephone tensions
Lotito admitted that “the relationship with the fans must radically improve“: “It may have happened that, on some occasions, in a climate of strong tension, embittered by harsh words, insults and continuous attacks, I answered the phone recklesslywith tones that I would not have wanted to use and which may have been perceived as distance or closure. If this happened, I take responsibility for it. But I want to be clear: there never has been, nor will there ever be, one lack of respect towards Lazio fans“. “I don’t ask you to always agree with me. However, I ask you to think together: to distinguish criticism from delegitimization, passion from destruction, dissent from irreparable fracture.”
