Trump claims the Strait of Hormuz is safe, shipping companies: ‘We don’t trust him!’

The war in Iran, which began with the American-Israeli attacks on February 28, has largely stopped traffic in the maritime passage key to a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, but also to products such as aluminum and fertilizers. Mitsui OSK, one of the big three shipping companies in Japan, owns over 900 vessels, including bulk carriers, tankers and ferries.

“What will have to be ready is not just an agreement between the relevant countries, but it must be material and translated into real situations in the Strait of Hormuz so that ships can pass comfortably,” company director Jotaro Tamura told the FT before US President Donald Trump announced the agreement to end the war in Iran.

“Given the experiences of the past few months, I think it’s reasonable to assume that it will take at least a couple of weeks if not a month,” Tamura told the newspaper.

The company did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The agreement between Washington and Tehran that is being finalized has not changed Tamura’s position, according to the FT report.

In a post on his social network Truth Social, Trump said that ships carrying oil are starting to leave the strait in its southern part “which is completely safe”.
