Trump assures that Iran will “accept” nuclear inspections as part of the agreement

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, assured this Monday that the Iranian authorities will agree to undergo “exhaustive” inspections of nuclear weapons, as part of the preliminary agreement signed by Washington and Tehran last week to cease hostilities and reopen the Hormuz crossing that must lead to negotiations within 60 days for a broader final agreement that also contains commitments on nuclear matters.

“Everyone is fully aware that Iran will agree to undergo exhaustive inspections of its weapons in order to guarantee ‘nuclear honesty’ in the long term,” he declared in a brief message on his social networks.

His message comes after the ‘number two’ of the White House, JD Vance, has highlighted among the “progress” achieved in the contacts with Iran held in Switzerland, that the Asian country will allow the return of nuclear inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), for the first time since the attack on February 28, in work that he has suggested will be immediate.

“Last night, around two in the morning, we tried to call some inspectors. As expected, at that time there were not many people answering the phone. But we believe that some of those conversations with the inspectors and with the IAEA could take place even today,” he detailed in a press conference from Burgenstock, the luxury resort where the United States and Iran met with the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar.

In any case, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismaeil Baqaei, has pointed out in statements to the IRNA news agency that the Asian country’s relations with the IAEA will continue “normally and in accordance with the approval of the Islamic Consultative Assembly and the decisions of the Supreme National Security Council.”

Meanwhile, official Iranian sources cited by IRNA have also indicated that the talks with the United States in Switzerland did not include the Iranian nuclear program nor did Tehran accept new commitments in this regard.
