Electoral law, there is a clash in the center-right over the collection of signatures

The House Committee voted the green light to sent to the rapporteurs on the electoral law which, therefore, will arrive in the Montecitorio Chamber on Friday.

Today’s session was characterized, however, by a clash over a amendment of Action which provides for theexemption from collecting signatures for parties that already had a parliamentary group on 31 December 2025. Amendment approved which aroused the wrath of Futuro Nazionale.

Reactions to the amendment

“A hustler amendment”, MP Edoardo Ziello defined it. The representative from Vannaccia harshly criticized the majority for not having discussed the proposal to include the preferences in the reform of electoral law. “Preferences are the only way to increase popular participation: the majority sends a bad signal to the country, together with the left. A technique designed to muzzle Futuro Nazionale, not to mention the hustler amendment”, continued Ziello during the explanations of vote on the mandate to the rapporteur, referring to the rule on collection of signatures: “It demonstrates the functionality of the centre-right to certain centre-left parties. For these reasons we will not even vote for the mandate of the speaker.”

Amendments rejected

The amendments for the digital subscription of the lists and for the introduction of the gender equality both in the blocked lists and in the district lists for the awarding of the prize.

Positions on preferences

On preferences the leader of Più Europa also focused. “Our democracy in crisis would have needed greater attention, sharing with the other forces of parliament, with the opposition forces, this desire was announced, but there was never sharing”, explained Riccardo Magi. “It is a force that does not strengthen citizens’ freedom of choice because the constituencies with respect to the law in force are removed, there will not be a double shift, there will not be preferences which I do not particularly like, but are an instrument of choice. There is, however, a majority bonus abnormal which makes your proposal worse than the Fraud Law”.

Opposition criticism

Having said this, Magi has announced that he is filing a report which he will ask for publication. “Less than 50 percent of the amendments presented were examined in the Commission and a significant part of the amendments remained set aside and was not unblocked not for reasons of merit or parliamentary discussion, but due to obvious internal difficulties within the majority”, recalled Simona Bonafè of the Democratic Party: “All the main political issues therefore remain open, which will now arrive directly in the Chamber without having been adequately addressed”. Even more serious is the fact that authoritative representatives of the majority are already calling for the use of question of trust. It would be a further and unacceptable compression of parliamentary debate on a matter that concerns the very functioning of our democracy.”

Observations of the M5s

Vittoria Baldino of the M5s recalls: “We had to attend a series of hearings of authoritative experts who reiterated the obvious, that the first text had evident aspects of unconstitutionality. You presented another, botched one. Despite this, we corrected issues to be defined, the opposition played its role in a constructive manner, despite it being an unamendable text”, explained the M5s exponent.
