Salzburger Stieglbrauerei separates from locations in Tyrol and Upper Austria

While Wörgl and Asten are to be sold, Stiegl would like to rent out the Inzing location. Most of the employees are to be taken on by logistics partners, and there are also social plans.

Terminations are not excluded

However, layoffs cannot be ruled out – Stiegl managing director Herbert Bauer had already announced this in October, the ORF reminds in its online report: “If things don’t go the way you want, it’s important that you react to it,” Bauer said at the time. He announced that he would redefine processes.

The conversion in the other federal states is intended to strengthen the main location in Salzburg-Maxglan at the same time. Stiegl emphasizes that this measure would secure hundreds of jobs in Salzburg, according to “salzburg24.at”. This is underlined by a major investment commitment: a high double-digit million amount is to flow into the Salzburg brewery location by 2030. In addition, the Stiegl-Gut Wildshut is to be expanded as a research and development center.

Further momentum towards trade

In the entire federal state of Salzburg and in the growth market of Vienna, where Stiegl operates a total of eight warehouses, logistics will continue to remain in its own hands, the “SN” quoted Bauer as saying. “The past five years have shown that we permanently need significantly fewer resources for catering supplies,” emphasizes the manager. “In short: we have our own logistics in parts of Austria that we can no longer utilize efficiently.” It is now time to react.

Less catering, discount competition

The Stiegl brewery, headquartered in Salzburg-Maxglan, has been producing more and more beer for years, but just as the red numbers have increased. In 2025 there was a minus of 5.2 million euros after minus 3.8 million euros in the previous year. The catering industry is shrinking, and inflation is also increasing. That’s why Stiegl sells most of its beer in stores, where supermarkets offer discounts and there’s a big fight for market share. Stiegl competes here against the many brands of the Brauunion, including Gösser, Puntigamer, Villacher and many others. Ottakringer is also among the bigger players.
