Microsoft plans to say goodbye to physical media for Xbox

In line with recent market trends which also see Sony oriented towards abandoning optical media, Microsoft is preparing to gradually stop the production of video games on disc for the Xbox ecosystem. To manage this transition without penalizing historic users, the multinational is developing an internal functionality called “Disc-to-Digital”. This option, references to which have emerged within the code of the Xbox application for PC, will allow existing physical collections to be digitized.

The system, currently being tested by company employees, will be limited exclusively to titles for Xbox One and Xbox Series This license will remain uniquely linked to the physical medium: in the event of selling or loaning the disc, the digital access right will automatically transfer to the new account.

Obtaining the digital license will equate the title to a purchase made on the Microsoft Store, unlocking the benefits of the ecosystem such as cloud gaming via Game Pass subscription and Xbox Play Anywhere features for access from PC. However, Microsoft warned its testers that some Xbox One discs may not be compatible with the program, due to technical specifications and variations in production processes at the time.

This strategy fits into the context of long-term hardware planning. Company leaders are considering whether to equip the next generation of consoles, known by the code name Project Helix, with an optical drive. The introduction of the digital conversion system would therefore be fundamental to guarantee the backward compatibility of physical catalogs in a completely dematerialized market scenario.
