Two are convicted in England for attacking Iranian journalist

Two Romanian men were sentenced this Friday (3) by the Central Criminal Court in London for stabbing Iranian journalist Pouria Zeraati, presenter of the Iran International broadcaster, based in the British capital and with an editorial line critical of the Iranian regime.

According to information from the Associated Press agency, Nandito Badea, 21, and George Stana, 25, were found guilty by a jury last month of bodily harm with intent to cause serious harm and today the sentences were announced: eight and 12 years in prison, respectively.

The crime occurred in March 2024, in front of the journalist’s house in the Wimbledon area of London. Zeraati was wounded in the leg; He recovered from the attack and returned to work, but moved to Israel, claiming he no longer felt safe in the UK.

Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb said this Friday that the “evidence overwhelmingly points out” that the attack was ordered by “a foreign power”, in reference to Iran.

According to the British Public Prosecutor’s Office, billboards with an image of Zeraati and the message “Wanted: Dead or Alive” had been placed in Tehran before the crime.

Badea and Zeraati fled British territory after the attack, but were arrested in Romania in December 2024 and extradited to the United Kingdom. The third suspect, David Andrei, faces criminal charges in Romania. Iran’s regime denied it was behind the attack.
