Sammer would have preferred an approach like that of the Argentinians, who were criticized for rowdy behavior after the defeat in the final against Spain, from the German team rather than the performances of the DFB team.

“I prefer their style of play to what I see from the German team at the moment. I can’t see anything about them anymore, neither athletically nor mentally. It gives reason to redefine the term helplessness,” he said. He has a serious impression that “our team lacks the unconditional will to win.”

Sammer: “Now it’s about German football!”

Among other things, Sammer would like to see a new performance culture and changes in the training of young players. “I have signaled to the two most important representatives of the DFB that I am ready to help our football in terms of content,” he said.

“But it’s not about a function or a position for Matthias Sammer, but about content. I’m familiar with that because I was able to convey it for six and a half years. In the end there was the 2014 World Cup title.” Sammer worked for the German Football Association from 2006 to 2012.

Sammer is convinced that Jürgen Klopp will be the new national coach. “Klopp is exactly the right person for this position,” he said. “Jürgen stands for something physical and high speed. He has a clear idea of ​​​​the game with and against the ball. He has aura and authority. He also knows that as national coach he will no longer be involved in daily training work in the future and will be dependent on what happens in the pyramid, in the youth work under him.”

Personally, he and the former coach of Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC, among others, were perhaps “not always happy,” explained Sammer, who recognized Klopp’s successes. Now it’s “not about Klopp or Sammer or any vanities. Now it’s about German football!”
