The Odyssey star Zendaya is being criticized for using ancient Iranian jewelry

The earrings Zendaya wears are made from nearly 3,000-year-old artifacts. They were part of the Ziwiye treasure found in 1947 in northwestern Iran. The jewelry currently belongs to the Barron London gallery in London.

Archaeologists and art historians have criticized the use of culturally significant objects in Hollywood film marketing.

“It’s shocking that no one has thought that this might not be a good idea,” Iranian-born art historian, professor Sussan Babies told The Guardian.

According to Babai, jewelry probably had an important religious meaning.

“These are objects that are not meant to be displayed as accessories. This is about human heritage, world heritage, not just accessories.”
