Trump says he accepted “pause” in the war at Iran’s request

“They asked us very kindly, ‘Please stop, let’s get together,’” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, the official plane of the American presidency.

“And that’s the situation we’re in now: see what happens. If we don’t reach an agreement, we’ll go back to the same situation as before,” added the Republican, according to information from CNN.

Intense fighting between the United States and Iran had resumed three weeks ago, after Trump announced that the Islamabad Memorandum, signed in June to extend the April ceasefire and open a 60-day deadline to negotiate a peace agreement, “has come to an end” because the Iranians insist on attacking commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz that use maritime routes not authorized by the regime. However, over the weekend, the American attacks were halted.

This Monday, Trump denied reports in the US press that members of his government expressed concern about American ammunition stocks in the face of a possible escalation in the conflict.

“We’re in a very good situation. But as for some of the more sophisticated items, we would certainly like to have more,” said Trump, who claimed that the United States has “a lot of ammunition” but that its stockpile of more advanced weapons has been reduced due to the Joe Biden administration’s military aid (2021-2025) to Ukraine.

The American president also spoke in conversation with journalists about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s criticism of a possible agreement to sell F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.

“He (Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan) is my friend, and no one tells me what we should sell him,” Trump said.

Another point refuted by the Republican was Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s claim that Russia may be helping Iran by passing on intelligence information about American bases.

“They (Russians) may be providing information, but if they are, it has not had any effect,” Trump said. “I don’t think they’re doing that. Certainly not at a high level.”
