La Jornada: “At Ceprodac we want to show that Mexico has magnificent artists”

With the program Between times: Anthology of choreographic poetics, Today, the Contemporary Dance Production Center (Ceprodac) will bring fragments of five works performed by Mexican choreographers and dancers to the Palace of Fine Arts as part of the 80 Movements Dance Season.

The fragments consist of reflections in which the body becomes an axis of reflection on war, absence, love and family.

During one of the rehearsals held at the Chapultepec Scenic Garden Laboratory, where three pieces were performed, the director of Ceprodac, Cecilia Lugo, reaffirmed that Mexico has dance professionals of the highest quality and level.

“We have very quality dancers and choreographers. We want the work we do at Ceprodac to be seen, so that the public knows that Mexico has magnificent artists. We aim to present syntheses or fragments of these five works so that the public can enjoy a great variety of themes and styles, since each choreographer has their own language.”

Cecilia Lugo explained that the only piece that will be presented complete will be Nicolas, of his authorship, which he dedicated to Guillermina Bravo and which for the first time will be performed by men, which represents a new challenge, since the choreography is designed to be performed by three women. In addition, a practice of the works was carried out black moon, of Beatriz Madrid, and of Wolves: The mystery of origin, by Barbara Alvarado.

“We adapt Nicolas because instead of the three interpreters we now have eight men; So, we expand the piece. We also focus on two creations with very different reflections: black moon, a story of angels who lose grace, reflect and perceive that they become demons, and Lobos, that talks about the animal aspect of the human being,” he explained.

New appropriations of the movement

To the rhythm of Danzón no. 2, by Arturo Márquez, Nicolas It is a game of sensuality. Created three decades ago to celebrate 75 years since the birth of Guillermina Bravo, this adaptation is a new way of seeing the possession of movement.

The raised fists of the eight performers, the movements of the arms and a fan are used to emulate the fast-paced rhythms of the musical work, which generates an atmosphere of tension and strength.

The presentation of black moon It will begin with a video about heaven and a meteorite, in which a group of 10 angels come, whose wounds from their severed wings are visible. Through contortions they feel their new nature, stripped of the holiness that represents them, which they express with wide movements of their arms, which at the same time represent denial and anger, frustration, sadness and pain. The performers evoke the paths that Eva and Lilith took, a dialogue between light and darkness scored by Felipe Pérez Santiago.

Wolves: The mystery of origin It is an exchange between animals and humans. Both are immersed in violence, but while the lupines gather in herds and show unity, the men become cannibals and prefer their individualism to the collective. The creator of the work, Bárbara Alvarado, states that her objective is to imply that, “although humans are the most intelligent animal, they are the only ones that prioritize their selfishness over teamwork and survival.” Through the similarity of movements, maternal shelter, hierarchy, the sense of belonging and the resignification of existence are represented.

The other two pieces that will be presented are Signs… The body of the night, by Óscar Ruvalcaba, a review of love today and the search for oneself through the eyes of the other, reflecting on the role of the Greek myth of Narcissus.

The program Between times: Anthology of choreographic poetics, It will be presented today for the only time at 7:30 p.m. in the main hall of the Palace of Fine Arts (Avenida Juárez s/n, Colonia Centro, Cuauhtémoc City Hall).
