Israeli scientists: Viagra can slow down the spread of cancer metastases

Researchers tested sildenafil in several human and mouse cancer models. The drug disrupted the movement of cholesterol inside tumor cells: cholesterol accumulated in lysosomes and became less available for the processes necessary for cells to move and form metastases. A particularly pronounced effect was observed when sildenafil was combined with statins, which suppress cholesterol synthesis.

The authors analyzed anonymized medical data of patients and found a statistical connection between taking sildenafil and higher survival of cancer patients. Additional beneficial effects were observed in patients taking statins concomitantly. However, we are talking about observational data, which by themselves do not prove that the drug improved the prognosis.

The study does not yet prove that Viagra treats cancer or prevents metastases in people. The main results were obtained in cell cultures and animal models, and controlled clinical trials are needed to verify the effectiveness and safety of such therapy. You cannot take sildenafil on your own to treat cancer.
