OpenAI reports surpassing one billion active users

OpenAI has announced that it has surpassed one billion active users of its artificial intelligence (AI) models, as part of its commitment to ensuring access to “more useful and accessible” intelligence for everyone.

The technology company, led by Sam Altman, has outlined the latest steps it has taken to deliver better intelligence, drive greater adoption, and, in turn, generate more investment to improve intelligence and efficiency.

As part of this initiative, the company announced that its models now reach more than one billion active users and over two million businesses, as shared in a blog post.

As part of this growth in its user community, OpenAI highlighted measures such as the recent price reductions for its most advanced models, cutting the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80 percent and Terra by 20 percent to boost cost efficiency and speed.

In the case of GPT-5.6 Sol, the fast mode offers up to 2.5 times the standard processing speed at twice the price, without any change in intelligence.

The technology company emphasized that these types of measures are not simply price changes, but rather “expand the range of services that can be offered and give customers greater flexibility to balance intelligence, speed, reliability, and cost.”

It also pointed out that a more robust model that performs the job correctly and efficiently can, in the long run, be more economical than a cheaper model that requires repeated attempts or more human intervention. “The key is to apply the maximum useful intelligence at the right price,” OpenAI stated, putting this premise on the table as part of its current strategy.

Along with its focus on price adjustments, OpenAI also highlighted the results of its recent engineering work, which has increased “the productivity of each processing unit.”

For example, in collaboration with its technical teams, GPT-5.6 Sol helped optimize the production software used to service its models, reducing end-to-end service costs by 20 percent. Similarly, it also helped improve speculative decoding, increasing token generation efficiency by more than 15 percent.

In addition, OpenAI has also invested in achieving better routing, smarter context management, more robust tools, and improved product design that reduces the number of steps required to complete a task.

All in all, the company asserts that these improvements, which are based on a cross-functional approach to infrastructure, models, platforms, and products, “facilitate access to the next generation of AI” and help it become a technology that reaches an ever-growing number of users, surpassing one billion active users of its services.

As they illustrated, six months after signing up, people are currently sending approximately 50 percent more messages each day and using ChatGPT for nearly twice as many types of tasks.

“Our goal isn’t simply greater processing power, larger models, or lower token prices. It’s more useful and accessible intelligence,” OpenAI concluded.
