Instagram changes its name logo after ten years

The social network Instagram changed the logo of its name after a decade, with a more simplified and italic font to “refresh” its identity, as announced by its director, Adam Mosseri. According to The Verge, the new wordmark moves away from the recognizable italic font used in the last ten years, replacing it with a strange hybrid between italic and block letters, which is somehow less readable than the previous one.

“The ‘wordmark’ (name logo) at the top of the app hasn’t changed in ten years, so it was time to refresh it. Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and artistry that have always distinguished Instagram,” Mosseri said on his platform account.

The Instagram app logo remains unchanged

The executive did not refer to the application logo itself, the famous square with a camera lens on a gradient background in purple and orange, which accompanied the previous graphic identity of the name.

User reactions between irony and nostalgia

Mosseri also shared the new name logo on Threadsintegrated into Instagram, and added that he wanted to know the “controversial opinions” of users, based on the fact that the change would be controversial. Many comments on Instagram and Threads have already reported that the updated version appears to say “Instagzam.” “Is it just me or does it read Instagzam?”, wrote one user, who pointed out the similarity between the letter r and z, while others read “Instaguam” or “Instagzam”.

Instagram changed its logo for the first time in 10 years and somehow made it look… unfinished.

The general consensus, however, remains difficult to interpret: some users regret the loss of the now iconic italic wordmark, while other comments, many of which according to The Verge appear to be written by bots, are a mixture of positive statements and emojis. The Verge also observes how “cleaner and more modern” often ends up simply meaning a more boring appearance and more similar to that of any other brand, and the author of the article concludes that he does not find the same charm in the new logo as the previous one, leaving the final judgment to the readers.
