The 5 largest machines in the world

These giant vehicles that surpass all limits in size, power and precision have become symbols of humanity’s technical achievements.

Large particle accelerator

According to Guinness World Records, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is the largest machine ever built with a circumference of about 26.6 km. Located in a tunnel beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, the machine uses 1,232 large superconducting dipole magnets to direct the particle beam around the giant circle. The LHC began operating in 2008, serving experiments studying the fundamental structure of matter, including the discovery of the Higgs boson particle.

Bagger 293

The Bagger 293 bucket wheel excavator manufactured by German company TAKRAF weighs 14,196 tons, is about 220 m long and 94.5 m high. Guinness World Records recognizes it as both the heaviest vehicle on land and the largest mobile industrial machine. The machine’s rotating bucket wheel is about 21.6 m in diameter and carries 18 buckets, each of which can hold thousands of liters of material. According to SiboBagger 293 can move about 240,000 m3 of soil per day. The machine moves very slowly, but its enormous size allows it to continuously transport cover soil from open pit mines.

Pioneering Spirit

Theo Interesting Engineeringat 382 m long and 124 m wide, the offshore construction vessel Pioneering Spirit is the world’s largest vessel by gross tonnage (403,342 tonnes) while operator Allseas describes it as the largest construction vessel. The unique double hull design allows the vessel to reach over floating offshore platforms and lift large monolithic structures. The ship’s lifting system can handle parts weighing up to 48,000 tons. Pioneering Spirit is also designed for super heavy-duty pipe installations.

Crawler-Transporter 2

NASA’s Crawler-Transporter 2 (CT-2) is one of the largest and slowest ground vehicles in the world. Guinness World Records recognizes CT-2 as the heaviest self-propelled vehicle (about 3,020 tons). NASA built the vehicle in the 1960s to transport Saturn V rockets from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad. Today, CT-2 primarily supports NASA’s Artemis program and can carry a payload of up to 8.2 million kg. The carriage moves on specially constructed tracks instead of regular asphalt roads.

Big Muskie

Completed in 1969 with a weight of about 13,200 tons, Big Muskie is the largest tractor ever built in human history. Its bucket can carry around 325 tonnes of soil while hydraulically operated legs allow the machine to change position around the mine. Big Muskie can move about 17,500 tons of soil per hour. The machine operated until 1991 and was finally dismantled in 1999.
