Tanja Fajon is leaving the EP due to her position in the new government of Slovenia

The president of the Slovenian party of the Social Democrats, Tanja Fajon, will leave the function of a member of the European Parliament (EP) and take a seat in the parliament or government of Slovenia, the newspaper Danas has learned unofficially from diplomatic circles.

Fajon, the current head of the EP Delegation for relations with Serbia, is most likely expecting a position in the new Slovenian government, namely the Speaker of the Parliament or the Minister in the Government, Danas states.

In the Slovenian media, Fajon is mentioned as a possible new Minister of Foreign Affairs, according to the Hina agency.

For now, it is not known who will succeed Fajon in the European Parliament, where she has been a member of parliament since 2009. Fajon was also the representative of the EP in the inter-party dialogue on election conditions in Serbia.

In the Slovenian parliamentary elections, held on Sunday, Tanja Fajon’s party won 6.66 percent of the vote and seven of the 90 seats.

After the election, Fajon announced that the Social Democrats will form a coalition with the Freedom Movement of Robert Golob, which will have 41 deputies in the new parliament.
