Germany demands more relaxations to the internal combustion engine ban – “Cars using renewable fuels should be counted as zero emissions”

Germany is putting more pressure on the EU to ease the partial ban on combustion engines and not tighten the car emission regulations any further. According to Merz, Germany is now demanding from the EU that emissions exceeding the 90 percent target should not be fully compensated.

In addition, according to Merz, vehicles that use exclusively renewable fuels should immediately be reduced to zero emissions. He also repeated his demand that the technology used in engines should not be restricted.

The German government also rejects the EU’s proposal that companies should be ordered to increase the number of electric cars in their fleet.

The emission calculation of plug-in hybrids has recently been tightened to better reflect their actual emissions in traffic. Germany wants to stop the gradual tightening of the calculation method.

EU member states and the European Parliament will negotiate new rules for the automotive industry throughout the spring, before they are agreed upon in the coming months.
