Despite high inflation and cautious consumer sentiment, Rewe Group Austria increased its gross sales by 2.2 percent to 11.36 billion euros in the 2025 financial year. No information is provided about the result. With around 47,000 employees, the company is one of the largest private employers in domestic retail. According to market researcher NielsenIQ, Rewe’s market share in the Austrian food trade fell by 0.5 percentage points to 32.4 percent. Competitor Spar is at 36.2 percent.
The food retail segment with Billa, Billa Plus, Penny and Adeg recorded an increase of 1.9 percent.
New logistics center
“2025 was a year of renewal. Despite difficult conditions, we were able to consolidate our position and implement important future projects,” summarizes Marcel Haraszti, CEO of Rewe International AG. “With our investments in logistics, expansion and the training of 2,300 apprentices, we are ensuring that we remain stable and efficient in the long term. This is how we drive our growth together.”
The largest investment offensive in the company’s history is gaining momentum: 300 million euros will flow into the Austrian location in 2025, and 350 million are planned for 2026. The group will invest a total of 1.5 billion euros by the end of 2027. The centerpiece is the new “Alpha” logistics center in Wiener Neudorf – at 600 million euros, the largest single investment in the company’s history. The highly automated center secures the domestic supply of goods in the long term. The groundbreaking ceremony for the logistics center will take place on May 13th.
Billa’s sales grew by 1.4 percent. 1.9 million customers are served every day. The grocer is continuing its expansion with independent Billa merchants. By the end of the year, the number of Billa merchants had risen to 40 and is expected to reach 200 by 2030.
Organic is booming
The organic offensive is also having an impact: organic sales rose three times more in 2025 than in the conventional sector. The organic content of bread and pastries is more than 50 percent, fresh milk is over 30 percent, and vegetables are 29 percent. Billa Plus leads the Austrian food retail market with over 7,000 plant-based products. Discounter Penny kept its sales level stable after two record years and started modernizing its branches: 90 million euros will flow into a new store layout with a focus on freshness over three years. 237 of the 320 branches have their own butchers, and the range of fruit, vegetables, bread and pastries has been significantly expanded.
The wholesale trade, which includes around 400 Adeg stores owned by 200 independent merchants, recorded an increase in sales of almost eight percent: “As a result of the takeover of Unimarkt locations, eleven locations were successively opened as Adeg stores in 2026, seven locations were taken over by Billa and three by Penny.”
