Now it’s researched – This electricity deal saves you money even when the market is storming

Even though there were severe frosts at the beginning of the year and the price of electricity was exceptionally high, in the long term, exchange electricity became cheaper than fixed-price electricity. This is what the electricity sales company says Nordic Green Energyn returns.

The company’s analysis is based on spot prices for a year-long period, which extends from the beginning of March 2025 to the end of February 2026. At the end of the review period, i.e. December–January, large movements were seen in the price of electricity on the exchange.

“The frosts in January caused a sharp turn, when the monthly average exchange price of electricity almost tripled compared to December. It is the rarest change in the realized average prices”, Director of Consumer Business at Nordic Green Energy Marcus Mäkynen says in the announcement.

In December, the average price of stock exchange electricity for an apartment building resident was 4.54 cents per kilowatt hour, but in January the price jumped to 14.91 cents. On the other hand, the price of a one-year fixed electricity contract for an apartment building resident was the lowest in the entire period in January and cost 9.90 cents per kilowatt hour.

For a customer of the company who lives in an apartment building, the realized weighted average price of stock exchange electricity was 7.85 cents on average for the period of the year ending at the end of February 2026. The amount includes the seller’s margin of 0.52 cents per kilowatt hour. The weighted average price for the entire year takes into account the fact that more electricity is consumed in the cold months, when the prices are higher.

In the same period, the price of a one-year fixed electricity contract was higher, according to the Energy Agency’s statistics, or on average about 11.05 cents per kilowatt hour.

“When looked at on an annual basis, the average price of electricity on the stock market was more affordable than the corresponding fixed-term contract. However, it must be noted that the total costs of an individual customer are significantly affected by their own consumption profile and when electricity is used the most.”

On Wednesday, the average hourly price of electricity on the stock exchange for consumers (including VAT of 25.5 percent) fell exceptionally low. The price dropped to zero and in the afternoon even to minus.
