Sales of heat pumps intended for residential buildings started to grow rapidly in Finland at the beginning of the year.
This is evident from the numbers published by the European heat pump association EHPA on Monday, May 4. According to them, sales of heat pumps in Finland increased by 48 percent in January–March compared to a year earlier. In terms of units, more than 26,000 heat pumps were sold.
The Financial Times has received More detailed monthly figures from EHPA. According to them, sales of heat pumps in Finland accelerated particularly strongly in March, when sales increased by as much as 71 percent compared to the previous year.
The background is influenced by the tightened situation in the energy market. The United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz on March 2, which has sharply increased the prices of natural gas and oil.
According to EHPA’s press release, the increase in demand for heat pumps in Finland is particularly reflected in the increased energy prices and the very low sales figures at the beginning of 2025. In addition, the hot summer experienced in Finland in 2025 is estimated to have increased the demand for air source heat pumps. Old heat pumps are now also being diligently replaced with new ones.
For Finland, the survey covered air heat pumps, air–water heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps and heat pumps that heat domestic water.
Finland has the fastest growth in Europe
The growth of heat pump sales in Finland at the beginning of the year was the fastest of all the countries included in the survey.
However, Finland is not alone with the heat pump boom. In all of the 11 European countries included in the survey, sales of heat pumps increased by an average of 17 percent year-on-year in January–March 2026.
Sales decreased clearly in only two of the participating countries: Austria (–30%) and the Netherlands (–14%).
“If your streaming service doubled its price and then stopped watching its movies, you’d be looking for a better alternative. Consumers have realized that heat pumps are the solution when gas and oil prices and availability are fluctuating,” European Heat Pump Association Director Paul Kenny says in the announcement.
According to Kenny, the EU Commission has presented important measures in its energy crisis plan to help households acquire a heat pump. The means include, among other things, reductions in value added tax and other taxes. Kenny urges the governments of the EU countries to implement the measures quickly.
