Record construction sites on the Italian railway network. And new interruptions are planned for the summer

I am 1,300 construction sites are active every day on the railway networkincluding major works, ordinary and extraordinary maintenance interventions and technological updates, for a total of 11.6 billion euros of investments in 2025. Per Italian Railway Network (FS Group) this is the highest level ever recorded, a result achieved thanks to the operation of the PNRR and the acceleration of network expansion and maintenance programmes.

The investment plan has had significant repercussions onnational economy and on employment levels. The interventions carried out in 2025 generated an impact of 20.5 billion euros on the value of production and 8.6 billion euros on GDPcon 112 thousand employed in the supply chains involved. Also included in this scenario are: 25 billion euros of PNRR funds assigned to the FS Group, of which 18 already invested until February 2026.

The transformation of the railway network

The construction activity, together with the routine interventions carried out every night to guarantee the continuity of the service, represents “the largest railway transformation in recent decades“. Among the priorities of the infrastructure plan, the construction of new high-speed lineswith the aim of increasing the 30% the population reached by fast connections.

Digitalization and resilience

They also include strengthening connections with ports, airports and logistics terminalsthe digitalization of the network and the increase of climate resilience. By 2027, new railway infrastructures will progressively come into operation and important technological enhancement interventions distributed along the entire national network will be completed.

New routes and strategic nodes

The route will be activated at the beginning of July 2026 Naples-Cancellofurther lot of the line AV/AC Napoli-Bariwhich will allow the interchange with the station Naples Afragola. In the second half of 2026, in the node of Genovathe sixfold increase between Genoa Principe and Genoa Brignoleseparating metropolitan flows from long-distance traffic.

Interventions in cities and regions

A Roma the first phase of work on the new stop will be completed Pigneto. In Sicilya Palermothe route will be operational Giachery-Politeama of the railway ring. Between Campania and Basilicata the works to speed up the line will be completed Battipaglia-Potenza. In Marche The end of the electrification works on the line is expected Civitanova-Albacina.

ERTMS and new lines

The technological upgrade of the system will continue in 2026 ERTMS on the line AV/AC Roma-Napoli. The line is expected to be activated in the first half of 2027 Brescia-Verona on the corridor Milan-Venice. The first four conventional lines equipped with ERTMS will also enter into operation: Terni-Sulmona, Lamezia Terme-Catanzaro Lido, Syracuse-Canicattì e Roccasecca-Avezzano.

North and Sardinia

Disruptions and investments

As mentioned, today they are active on the network every day 1,300 construction sitesand they are about272 thousand scheduled interruptions per year. RFI’s investment volume grew by 49% compared to 2023. Of the total, the 37% is intended for maintenance and the 63% to major strategic works.

New construction model

Outages increased by 115% from 2023. To reduce the impact on circulation, a model has been adopted longer interruptions concentrated in periods of lower traffic, optimizing resources and reducing inconvenience for travellers.

Scheduled outages

In detail, the planned temporary stops: AV/AC Milan-Venice line: 2-16 August, 15-day interruption between Verona and Vicenza for construction of the Vicenza crossing and works in the Montebello station with route diversions.
Florence hub: 5 July-9 July and 26 July-30 July for the second phase of the replacement of the Ponte al Pino railway overpass, with travel solutions that include bus shuttles between Florence Santa Maria Novella and Florence Campo di Marte or diversions on the Tirrenica line.
On the HS/AC Milan-Bologna line: 10-17 August, eight-day interruption between Piacenza Est and Melegnano for renewal of switches and alternative solutions on the conventional Milan-Bologna line.
On the Milan-Genoa line: Extraordinary maintenance activities on the Po Bridge are planned from 3 June to 30 September. In particular, from 20 July to 28 August, the complete interruption of the line is expected with alternative solutions and extensions of travel times.
HS/AC Florence-Rome line: 10-28 August, interruption between Chiusi Sud and Orvieto Nord for maintenance work on the Fabro tunnel and the Paglia viaduct. During construction site activities, trains travel along the conventional line with increased travel times.
Along the Caserta-Foggia line: from 10 to 30 June for the continuation of the planned activities of the new one AV/AC Naples-Bari line. Alternative solutions and bus rides are available.
