La Jornada: Mexican automobile exports to the US increase 11%

Exports of light vehicles rose 11.4 percent annually last April, which represented their most pronounced increase since June of last year, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

According to the Administrative Registry of the Automotive Industry of Light Vehicles (Raiavl), carried out by Inegi, exports amounted to 286,317 units, which meant an increase of 29,364 units compared to April 2025.

This increase was driven by the diversification undertaken in the automotive industry in the country in the face of the tariff pressure imposed by the United States.

Exports to that country, Mexico’s main trading partner, increased 11.3 percent in April, which represented 219,097 units, 76.5 percent of all those sold abroad.

Sales to Canada increased 20.7 percent, accounting for 36,444 units. For their part, exports to Brazil rose 164.6 percent and 9.6 to Colombia.

Slight increase in production and export

Production in the automotive industry in Mexico, for its part, was 329,878 vehicles, which represented an annual increase of 2.14 percent, equivalent to 6,914 units.

During the first four months of the year, exports totaled 1,81,948 vehicles, 4.68 percent more than last year’s accumulated figure; that is, 48 ​​thousand 393 more units. It is its third consecutive year above one million units in the first four months of the year.

Last week, Inegi announced that sales of the automotive industry of light vehicles in Mexico recorded their best April since records began (2005), which contributed to record sales for the first four months of the year.

The agency also specified that sales of new light vehicles in Mexico amounted to 118,859 units in April 2026, and represented an increase of 8.6 percent annually, equivalent to 9,439 more vehicles compared to April 2025.
