YPF increases its fuels by 1% and renews a price agreement for another 45 days

“Starting tonight, YPF increases fuel prices by 1% and will extend the buffer up to 45 more days,” Marín communicated by A24.

This announcement comes in advance of the expiration of the previous price stability commitment that had been resolved at the beginning of April.

“During this period, at YPF we will not pass on to consumers the impact of sudden fluctuations in the international price of oil (Brent), maintaining without restrictions the other variables that make up the price, as has been done in the previous period,” Marín added in his account. X.

The executive explained that the 1% increase was after a “detailed analysis of market conditions and supply and demand variables.”

Thus, the prices of gasoline and diesel will rise between $20 and $23 per liter in the City of Buenos Aires. Super gasoline will be around $2,040, or $1.45.

YPF’s internal decision seeks to keep fuel consumption firm, in a market where the business is to sell large volumes. As Marín explained last week to investors, the freezing of prices was determined after observing that in the second half of March demand had fallen 10% compared to the first two weeks.

In addition, it helps the Government to continue trying to lower inflation, which had been complicated by the 23% increases in fuel that occurred during March and that had a statistical effect until April inclusive – the official data will be known this Thursday.

With the freezing of gasoline and diesel prices, which excludes official updates on taxes and biofuels, the refiners (YPF, Axion -of PAE-, Raízen -which operates the Shell brand- and Trafigura -which has the Puma Energy network-) have been losing the equivalent in pesos of between 100 and 150 million dollars per month, given the difference between the international value of oil and that of delivery in the domestic market, which is 95 dollars per barrel.

The refiners process about 530,000 barrels per day and sell it below their parity. YPF estimated that in April the domestic price of fuel net of taxes was 90.5 cents per liter on average, compared to an import parity of US$ 1.07 on average. Thus, gasoline and diesel would have a delay of 15%, numbers shared by other companies in the sector.

In this way, the fuel market is now functioning with a transfer of resources from companies to consumers, the cost of which is mainly assumed by the refiners and, to a lesser extent, by the producers -Vista Energy, Chevron, Shell, Pluspetrol, Pampa Energía, Phoenix Global Resources and Tecpetrol-.

This transfer of resources is temporary “financing”, which will be returned in the coming months: just as gasoline and diesel are not increasing now that oil is rising, when oil falls, they will not fall for a long time either.

The oil companies’ bet is that the war in the Middle East will end as soon as possible, with a lasting agreement between Iran, the United States and Israel that will decompress the price of crude oil and take it below US$90 sustainably.
