Nvidia to build AI mega data center in South Korea

The US chip giant Nvidia announced plans to build a huge data center in South Koreaalong with a number of trade agreements with the country’s technology companies. These partnerships were revealed following Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to Seoul, where he attended a Korean barbecue with executives from local technology companies. Among the numerous agreements announced, SK Telecom e Nvidia they plan to “build a cloud per l’IA on scale gigawatt in Korea… with the first AI factory which should be operational in 2027“, according to a joint statement. The project “will support services of TO sovereignphysical and agency for companies and industries across Korea, with the ambition to expand into major regions in Asia,” he added, without specifying the investment amount.

SK Telecom belongs to the same group as SK Group, the same parent company as SK Hynixmanufacturer of memory chip which announced a separate partnership with Nvidia.

Technology partnership on chips

This “multi-year technology partnership” aims to jointly develop advanced memory chips for systems artificial intelligenceas these components are currently under great pressure due to the growing global demand.

Production capacity and shortage

SK Group President Chey Tae-won pledged last week to double production capacity of silicon wafers used to make memory chips.

Collaborations in artificial intelligence

However, he reiterated that the shortage could persist until 2030since building a factory takes at least three years. Nvidia also announced collaborations in the field ofartificial intelligence with the technology giant Naver and the robotics company Doosan Group.
