Labor court recognizes the legitimacy of a rival teachers’ union

The Jerusalem District Labor Court has issued an interim decision finding that Teachers for Change (Morim Movilim Le-Shinui) meets the criteria necessary to be recognized as a trade union organization.

The decision was made as part of a lawsuit initiated by the Ministry of Education and the teachers’ union led by Yaffa Ben-David, representing primary school teachers, junior high school teachers and kindergarten teachers.

The ministry and the union argued that Teachers for Change was not an “authentic” organization, but the court reviewed its activities and rejected the teachers’ union’s claims that it was a “sham” or “failed.”

In addition, the court upheld a ruling prohibiting the Ministry of Education from deducting “organizational fees” from the salaries of teachers who are members of the organization and transferring them to the teachers’ union.

The teachers’ union noted that “this is a decision taken under an interim procedure” and that “the teachers’ union will appeal to the National Labor Court in the coming days.”
