Romania buys Israeli air defense systems for 2 billion euros

The Israeli state defense concern Rafael and the Romanian Ministry of Defense have signed a framework agreement for the supply of SPYDER air defense systems worth about 2 billion euros.

As part of the agreement, Rafael undertook to supply the Romanian army with a significant number of air defense batteries of this type. The deal includes launchers, interceptor missiles, radar systems, as well as training and logistics support systems for the units that will operate these air defense systems.

Delivery of the new systems for use by the Romanian Army will begin within three years.

The SPYDER system is a mobile air defense system based on Python-5 and Derby missiles, designed to protect ground targets from a wide range of air threats – combat aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and precision guided munitions.

In addition to the IDF, the system is in service with the armies of the Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Georgia, India, Ethiopia, Morocco, Singapore, the Philippines, and the UAE.
