La Jornada: Demand for electronics drives state exports

In an environment of high trade uncertainty, associated with the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), but with a rebound in the technology sector, the computing, communication, measurement and other electronic components and accessories sector led the rebound by state in Mexico’s exports in the first quarter of 2026, revealed the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Export activity is concentrated in seven entities: Chihuahua, Jalisco, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Baja California, Guanajuato and Tamaulipas, with three quarters of sales during the first quarter of 2026, in which the manufacturing of computing, communication, measurement equipment and other electronic equipment, components and accessories stood out.

In the first quarter, the value of state exports reached 158 thousand 117.5 million dollars, among which Chihuahua added 35 thousand 986.2 million (22.8 percent of the total); Jalisco, 17 thousand 377.5 million (11 percent); Coahuila, 14,889 million (9.4); Nuevo León, 14 thousand 537.6 million (9.2); Baja California, 12 thousand 946.6 million (8.2); Guanajuato, 10 thousand 20.6 million (6.3), and Tamaulipas, 7 thousand 699.7 million dollars (4.9 percent). Thus, they contributed 71.8 percent of the country’s total.

Manufacturing sector

In January-March 2026, manufacturing exports represented 92.3 percent of the total value of the states’ foreign sales. They followed those of mining (oil and non-oil), with 4.8 percent, and those of the agricultural sector, with 2.9.

At an annual rate, the value of state exports increased 17.9 percent. According to economic sectors, manufacturing increased 19.9 percent, and mining, 6.8. That of the agricultural sector decreased 13.1 percent.

Due to their contribution to the value of Mexico’s total exports, in the first quarter of the year, computer, communication, measurement equipment and other electronic components and accessories stood out in the manufacturing sector, adding 50 thousand 77.8 million dollars (31.7 percent).

Chihuahua represented 52 percent of these exports; Jalisco, 27.4 percent; Baja California, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, 8.6, 4.5, 3.6, respectively.
