French businesses own 6 Zero Carbon factories in Vietnam

The French construction materials giant has reached the milestone of owning 6 Zero Carbon factories, one of the leading scale in this industry in Vietnam.

After the upgrade investment process, Saint-Gobain Vietnam has just announced that 6 factories in 4 key production clusters have achieved the goal of “Zero Carbon” – carbon-free production scope 1 & 2, independently verified by Deloitte.

According to Mr. Nguyen Truong Hai, General Director of Saint-Gobain Vietnam, the milestone demonstrates the commitment to accompany the country’s green transformation. At the same time, contributing to the sustainable construction solution ecosystem that is of interest to contractors, investors and users.

These six factories are distributed in Hung Yen, Quang Tri and Ho Chi Minh City, specializing in the production of frame systems, fiber cement panels and construction mortar, accounting for a significant proportion of the company’s supply of key construction materials.

According to the Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards (GHG Protocol), Scope 1 (Scope 1) is direct emissions from business activities, Scope 2 (Scope 2) includes indirect emissions from the energy production process that businesses use.

To achieve Zero Carbon for Scope 1, all 6 factories replaced diesel forklifts with electric forklifts. At the same time, completely eliminate fossil fuels in internal transportation activities.

Scope 2 is deployed flexibly depending on the conditions of each facility. Vinh Tuong Hiep Phuoc Factory (Ho Chi Minh City) and factory clusters in Hung Yen and Quang Tri, switched to using 100% renewable electricity to achieve International Renewable Energy Certificates (IREC).

Particularly at Weber Hiep Phuoc’s house, 36.5% of demand is used from the on-site rooftop solar power system, combined with the remaining 63.5% through IREC. According to calculations, eliminating Scope 1 & 2 CO₂ emissions at 6 factories is equivalent to reducing 7,900 tons of CO₂ per year.

Saint-Gobain was founded 361 years ago in France, is present in 80 countries and records revenue of 46.6 billion euros by 2025. This group aims to be carbon neutral (Net Zero) by 2050, currently has 11 factories in Vietnam.

“The Zero Carbon production step not only creates an important milestone in Vietnam’s own development journey, but also contributes to shaping the future of the sustainable construction industry throughout Asia,” said Mr. Ludovic Weber, General Director of Saint-Gobain Asia.
