Mexico has established itself as an important and expanding supplier of data center servers powered by artificial intelligence (AI), according to an analysis by Standard and Poor’s (S&P) Global, the rating agency’s data and analysis firm.
Server exports grew 172.1 percent annually as of last June and 93.9 percent of them went to the United States, to companies such as Wistron Corporation, Flex Ltd and Invected Corporation.
As of the previous June, exports of computer servers amounted to 136.8 billion dollars, just below those of automobiles and auto parts, which reached 153.5 billion dollars in the same period.
S&P Global stated that the rapid expansion of the cutting-edge electronics industry underscores the suitability of Mexico as a relocation center, even amid trade uncertainty arising from the imposition of tariffs by the United States and the review of the Mexico, United States, Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“The growing need for data centers driven by the rise of AI has made Mexico become a growing source of computer servers widely used in these spaces,” the firm reiterated.
He highlighted that Mexico’s automotive sector was the main exporter in recent years, but is quickly being surpassed by the growth of computer servers.
Purchases from Taiwan increased 146.4%
In the study, S&P assured that Mexican imports from Taiwan increased 146.4 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2026.
“Taiwan now represents 13.4 percent of Mexico’s total imports compared to 2.1 percent in 2019, which makes it Mexico’s third largest supplier,” he said.
“The growth has been mainly due to imports of computer servers, which reached 28.4 billion US dollars in the first half of 2026 alone, surpassing all of 2025. Other imports of computer components have also seen substantial increases,” commented S&P.
The firm noted that despite the 50 percent tariffs recently imposed by Mexico on countries with which it has not signed free trade agreements, information and communications technology products are exempt from tariffs.
“The continued demand for electronic products driven by AI combined with infrastructure development is expected to sustain the growth of Mexico’s electronics sector, although security and connectivity challenges persist,” he predicted.
In turn, the rating agency Moody’s stated in an analysis that Mexico is the main exporter of computer servers to the United States, with approximately two-thirds of total US imports of this equipment.
For Eduardo Amaro, regional director of Rockwell Automation Mexico, a US supplier of industrial automation technologies, digital transformation is already a strategic pillar of companies, as it determines their profitability and survival.
“It is essential to incorporate technologies that integrate autonomous systems capable of learning, adapting and optimizing themselves in real time,” he mentioned.
