Belgium: Inflation virtually stable in August at 4.09 percent

Inflation in Belgium fell to 4.09 percent in August, from 4.14 percent in July. This is evident from figures from Statbel, the Belgian statistics agency, on Wednesday. In October last year, inflation peaked at 12.27 percent.

Inflation for food has risen sharply in the past year. Inflation for food (including alcoholic beverages) is 12.73 percent this month, compared to 13.23 percent in July. The contribution of food to inflation is currently 2.47 percentage points.

The main price increases in August related to motor fuels, domestic heating oil, hotel rooms, confectionery, bread and cereals, alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic beverages, domestic travel and personal care. Electricity, fruit and plane tickets, on the other hand, had a decreasing effect on the index.

Core inflation, which does not take into account the price evolution of energy products and unprocessed food, was 7.70 percent in August, compared to 7.88 percent in July.
