Unemployment: the number of job seekers increased in the third quarter

The number of unemployed people in category A, that is to say without activity, increased by 0.6% in the third quarter throughout France (excluding Mayotte), according to figures published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labor. An additional 17,400 people registered, bringing the number of job seekers in category A to 3.028 million.

Including reduced activity (categories B and C of Pôle emploi), the number of job seekers in France increased by 0.2% in the third quarter compared to the previous quarter, i.e. 8,800 more registered and ‘establishes a total of 5.352 million, according to the Statistics Directorate of the Ministry of Labor (Dares).

Over one year, however, unemployment continues to trend downward in the third quarter, with 120,000 fewer job seekers (i.e. 3.8%), compared to summer 2022. The trends are not the same according to age groups, still over one year: the number of job seekers aged under 25 increased by 3.1% over one year, while it decreased by 4% among those aged 25-49 years and even 6.4% among those aged 50 and over.

Increase in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and New Aquitaine

Compared to the second quarter, where the number of category A unemployed had decreased slightly, by 0.2%, the number of category B unemployed, those having exercised a reduced activity of 78 hours maximum per month, is on the contrary in notable increase of 3.1%, with 24,900 more people in this situation. But there are 3.3% fewer unemployed people in category C, that is to say those who have exercised a reduced activity of more than 78 hours per month.

The ministry further notes that “entries to Pôle emploi are increasing” by 0.7%, with “a sharp reduction in layoffs and first entries”, and on the other hand an increase in “ends of temporary assignments”, “returns inactivity” and “conventional terminations”. Finally, “exits from Pôle emploi decrease sharply”, by 4.4% with “a sharp reduction in updating errors and search stoppages” (namely in particular deregistrations from Pôle emploi and exits from the labor market) .

 

By region, the number of job seekers in category A increases by 1.6% in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, by 1.4% in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and by 1.1% in the Grand-Est. It decreased by 0.9% in the overseas departments (excluding Mayotte) and by 0.7% in Corsica, while it was stable in Île-de-France.
