Helen made a historic decision – The first green hydrogen pilot plant will be ready in 2026

The Vuosaari power plant area will become a large center for renewable hydrogen.

Helen is building Helsinki’s first hydrogen production plant in Helsinki’s Vuosaari.

The power of the pilot plant called 3H2, or Helsinki Hydrogen Hub, is about three megawatts. The hydrogen is intended to be used in heavy traffic, for which a hydrogen filling station will be built in connection with the facility.

Hydrogen can also be delivered in containers to customers.

The plant is located near the Helsinki district heating network and Vuosaari harbour. The waste heat generated in the production process is utilized in Helen’s district heating network, which increases the plant’s overall energy efficiency to more than 90 percent, according to Helen’s press release.

The name 3H2 refers to the fact that the project combines four different sectors: electricity, transport, heating and hydrogen. The manager responsible for new business operations and hydrogen Sari Mannose according to 3H2 is the first of its kind in the world.

In the 3H2 plant, hydrogen is produced with renewable electricity.

It is still a pilot, after which it aims for large-scale hydrogen production in Vuosaari.

Starts in 2026

The goal is to start hydrogen production in the new facility in 2026. The filling station will open in 2027.

The project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 3,700 tons per year. The calculation takes into account the replacement of fossil fuel in heavy traffic and the utilization of waste heat in the district heating network.

The project will receive EUR 8.25 million in investment support for new energy technology large demonstration projects from the Ministry of Labor and the Economy.

The goal of the project is to test the production of green hydrogen and to optimize production in terms of hydrogen demand, renewable electricity production and the electricity market, and to ensure the functionality of new hydrogen technologies.
