Urtasun on the transfer of ‘Guernica’: “I am in favor of these things, but I cannot do this”

This Tuesday, the Minister of Culture reiterated his opposition to the transfer of ‘Guernica’ to the Basque Country due to its state of conservation. “I am in favor of this type of thing, but I cannot do it, it would not be responsible for me to put this heritage at risk,” argued the head of Culture in an interview on TVE collected by Europa Press.

He has assured that he understands the request of the Basque Government and PNV, but has stressed that his obligation as minister is that “this painting, which is so important for future generations to understand what fascism was, what war was, can last 90 more years.”

To this end, he insisted that “technical criteria must be followed” and recalled that Pablo Picasso’s work “is in very poor condition.” “It has traveled 11 times, which means that it has been rolled up 11 times and that it is in very bad condition,” justified the head of Culture, who recalled his mandate “to protect the heritage.” “I can’t do this,” he concluded.
