“For debate and against censorship”, the prestigious Pulitzer rewards coverage of Trump politics

A form of right of reply to Donald Trump, self-proclaimed enemy of the media? Coverage of the Republican administration dominated Monday’s ceremony for the prestigious Pulitzer Prizes, annual awards for American press and literature presented by Columbia University in New York.

“We fight for public debate and against censorship”declared Marjorie Miller, the administrator of the awards, before the announcement of the winners rewarded for their coverage of the repression carried out by Donald Trump on immigration or the enrichment of his relatives or allies.

She described “media access to the White House and Pentagon restricted”a “freedom of expression threatened in the streets” and “Lawsuits filed by Donald Trump for billions of dollars” against many media.

Links with the Gulf monarchies

The Pulitzer Prize for public service journalism was awarded to Washington Post for his articles on the attempts “chaotic” of the American administration to reform the federal bureaucracy and the dismissal of thousands of federal agents which followed.

The investigative journalism prize was won by the New York Times and his series on how Donald Trump “exploited the lucrative opportunities associated with power, thereby enriching his family and allies”and in particular on the way in which those close to the American president took advantage of his links with the Gulf monarchies, as well as their activities in the field of cryptocurrencies.

An investigation into Jeffrey Epstein

The Associated Press was awarded in the international reporting category for its articles on the authorization granted by the American government to companies to sell surveillance technologies to China.

In the local press category, it is the Chicago Tribune who won the award for his reporting on immigration enforcement (ICE) raids in the Midwestern city. The journalist from Miami Herald Julie K. Brown also received special mention for her investigations between 2017 and 2018 into sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein, which revealed how prosecutors protected him when he was first accused of raping young women.
