FashionThis year, the dress code of the Met Gala was “fashion is art”. HS asked designer Miro Hämäläis to evaluate the most successful outfits.
The Met Gala was organized on Monday in New York with the theme “fashion is art”.
Designer Miro Hämäläinen chose Sombri, Emma Chamberlain and Madonna as the most successful dressers of the event.
Hämäläinen especially praised the outfits where the imagination can be unleashed and which evoke several associations.
in New York The Met gala organized on Monday night once again focused the eyes of the world’s fashion crowd on the Metropolitan Museum of Art, whose historical costume institute this charity event is organized every year.
It has become the most important fashion event in the world. Its invited guests are encouraged to dress according to a separately defined theme each year.
This year the theme was Costume Art, and the dress code was defined as “fashion is art”.
Hundreds of invited guests arrived at the club event. We asked the designer Miro from Hämälä to choose three men and three women from among the guests who succeeded in dressing the best.
Gentlemen
500 hours of handwork were needed to make the sombre cloak, according to the fashion magazine Vogue.
1. Shadow
“Here was one of the few men who was actually wearing something completely different from what he was used to seeing, i.e. a black suit and a collared shirt. Parasol was cloakwith floor-length fringes. Or it’s some sort of sequined fabric that’s partially transparent. The same motif is repeated in the pants, but made with a different technique.
Sombri’s outfit was designed by Alessandro Michele of the Valentino fashion house.
It has silver and satin, velvet, lace, leather shoes and some silk chiffon. A lot of different things have been combined, but what pleases me in this and a few other men’s outfits is that the imagination starts to gallop.
You can’t immediately see what this is about. This reminds me of anything: bullfighting, flamenco, Spanish. There are so many references here that it would be interesting to know what this is about in more detail.”
Designer Raul Lopez’s outfit was a production of his own Luar luxury fashion label.
2. Raul Lopez
“This was simpler than Sombri’s outfit, but here the print is really beautifully worked with sequins. It looks like they are all hand sewn into it. Really wonderful composition and nice colors together. Showy, really suitable for a man.
You don’t have to go too far from something that is comfortable, but it still clearly shows that fashion is art.
Here, the people who know how to make such sequins show off their skills and bring it together with someone who has a vision. That’s how the most beautiful art is born, at least on this fashion canvas!”
Manish Malhotra’s cape required a lot of craftsmanship.
3. Manish Malhotra
“I read from the BBCthat it took 50 artisans 960 hours to make this cloak. What appealed to me was that such expertise is shown, but with good taste. In a way, it’s a pretty incredible element glued on top, but it blends into this whole thing beautifully.
It’s believable – at least I believe this is a work of art. There is so much to look at here and apparently this says it all Manish Malhotran from hometown Mumbai. Looking at this, you want to know more about it, so here art and fashion work as a means of communication.”
Manish Malhotra’s cape had plenty of detail.
Ladies
Emma Chamberlain’s colorful outfit was designed by Miguel Castro Freitas.
The upper part of Emma Chamberlain’s dress resembled a painted canvas.
1. Emma Chamberlain
“Foremost I hit my eyes by Emma Chamberlain in an outfit that looks like something from a Van Gogh painting. It has a really wonderful use of color.
This is apparently a reinterpretation of an old Mugler outfit, and it’s done in a really beautiful way. It allows you to show your body and be really beautiful and sexy, but let’s still go ahead with the fashion is art theme. Here it has been shown that there is something to be given to this form of art.
The great thing about this outfit is that it reminds me of so many things and it touches something. That’s what you should try to achieve on the steps of the Met Gala.”
Lena Dunham wore a dramatic red outfit.
2. Lena Dunham
“Red, very bright red, absolutely wonderful outfit. This is Valentino’s creative director Alessandro Michelen designed by Big sequins, different sizes, that look really violently like drops of blood. And big feathers, really showgirl-like and theatrical.
The outfit was inspired by a 17th-century painting, where a dagger is thrust into a man’s throat and blood gushes out. The color is arresting.
It’s also nice to see that even if you don’t necessarily have a model body, you can still dare to go with a really fierce outfit and let the fashion speak for itself. There is very little make-up and nothing has been done to the hair.”
Madonna’s outfit included, among other things, a veil supported by seven assistants and a ship motif on the headdress.
3. Madonna
”Madonna is here, as it were, a queen with seven ladies holding her veil. The storytelling of this outfit fascinates. The Madonna here is like the night sea, or a ghost ship on the night gray sea, which buckles behind.
Even though the elements are in a way literal, they are not too literal, that is, the imagination can do its work and you can try to think through the symbolism of what you want to say here.
It occurred to me that Madonna, as a veteran pop star, can try to show us followers the way or sail us through stormy waters. This outfit can be interpreted one way or another.”
Madonna’s outfit can be interpreted in many ways, designer Miro Hämäläinen thinks.
