Museum security: the report of the parliamentary commission of inquiry published on May 13

The report of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into museum security, set up after the theft at the Louvre in October, will be published on May 13, after a favorable vote on Wednesday by the MPs who are members of this commission, its rapporteur Alexis Corbière (environmental group) announced to AFP. The commission, chaired by Alexandre Portier (LR), was formed at the beginning of December in the wake of the spectacular burglary at the Louvre on October 19, which caused a worldwide stir and revealed significant security flaws in the museum for some 9 million annual visitors.

The publication of the report was “voted unanimously” members of the commission. “All the groups were present. There were no abstentions”declared Alexis Corbière. The report formulates “forty recommendations”to make “faced in particular with an evolution of threats, the lack (…) of means of protection, the difficult working conditions of staff, the weak control of supervisory authorities, the opacity of the conditions of appointment of the management of these large establishments”said the MP in a press release.

After hearing “nearly a hundred people”travel and documentary analyses, the commission “exposed weaknesses that are too often overlooked”affirms, in a separate press release, Alexandre Portier, believing that he does not want “designate culprits, but prevent what happened from happening again”.

“A failure of a systemic nature”

“We are not facing an isolated incident, but rather a failure of a systemic nature. At the Louvre, as in other establishments, security has not been treated as a central priority, even though it constitutes the most fundamental mission of any museum institution.he adds.

According to him, “at the Louvre, in particular, despite old alerts and identified risks, the security policy has gradually drifted, without a reaction commensurate with the challenges”. In mid-February, during a progress update, these two officials accused the museum of having become a “State within a State”au “faulty management”crushing the management of the museum.

In the report’s recommendations, MP Alexis Corbière intends to emphasize “three priorities”: “the staff”, “the means that must be given to establishments” et “the designation of establishment presidents by the President of the Republic”which he wishes to see “modified”he told AFP.
