Swedish author Håkan Nesser, convicted of tax evasion, is released from prison

The court denied Nesser earlier in May the possibility of serving the final sentence as a probationary sentence, as the authorities felt that the writer would lead an isolated life without work outside the home.

The condition of the permit granted now is that Nesser works in Gotland’s home region association according to the agreed schedule.

Nesserin the convictions came from the fact that he, together with another person, had received almost 15 million Swedish kronor, or just under 1.4 million euros, in dividends through a Maltese company without notifying the tax authorities.

Nesser claimed it was an accidental mistake. He assumed that he would get over it by paying additional taxes.

The decision was a big shock for Nesser, as the district court had considered in its verdict that Nesser is innocent. However, the prosecutor appealed the case, and the Court of Appeal disagreed with the District Court. The Supreme Court did not take up the case.
