Actor Seela Sella was diagnosed with cancer in the spring. Swallowing had become painful, and examinations revealed that the cause was pharyngeal cancer. Now the seven-week treatment period is over.
“I have killed one cancer”, Sella says to HS in triumph.
“But this is not over yet.”
During pharyngeal cancer treatments, the sense of taste and smell disappeared. Sella says she asked her nutritionist when the phase will end.
“He said little by little. I asked what is little by little. He said that some people have weeks, some months. For some it can be years,” says Sella.
“I don’t know if it’s quiet now, if I’ve had it for years. But those people are wonderful. I fight tooth and nail for them,” Sella says of Husi’s nursing staff.
“Handsome men and lovely women all.”
Sella underwent radiation therapy every day during the treatment period. The exposure itself lasted ten minutes at a time.
“They put such a terrible hood on your head, and you can’t move at all in it. I hated that. And I still have a stoma in my stomach, and I’m fed directly through a tube and tube when I haven’t been able to swallow.”
Now swallowing is starting to go well again, but tube feeding will continue through the summer.
“I practice patience, eating and living again all the time,” says Sella.
Illness because of this, Seela Sella had to cancel performances scheduled for spring and early summer. In August, however, he already plans to perform “a few gigs”. At least it is known Love letters-play performance at Tampere Theater Summer together Esko to Roine with. There is still a premiere in January.
“Yes, I want to get to work in August. I get energy from people, people have been wonderful. I don’t know where the boring and horrible ones are,” says Sella.
The good thing about Sella’s illness and the treatment period was that her voice remained fine.
“My vocal cords are strained when I have to cough out the mucus. The mucus protects, but it’s disgusting. I’ve had a terrible cough that tears up my internal organs, but that’s okay, it’s also going away little by little. Little by little.”
“Now you can say that even a ninety-year-old can cope with almost anything.”
He describes the period of illness as an experience from which he has become wiser.
“Now I know what a person goes through and what kind of stages it is. You can’t influence everything yourself, but you can quite a lot.”
Sella says that she asked at the hospital if anyone had survived pharyngeal cancer, and the answer was yes.
“Yes, someone in their thirties. But is there someone in their nineties? I was told that ‘we’ll just leave and see.’
Seela was the first to tell about Sella’s recovery Evening newspaper.
Correction 26.6. 1:19 p.m.: The article previously incorrectly wrote about a nutritional therapist. The correct professional title is nutritionist.
