First new participating country since 2015: Canada will take part in the ESC in 2027

The world’s second largest country is the first new participant since Australia joined in 2015.

“Even though the competition was born in Europe, it continues to welcome the whole world,” explained ESC-Direktor Martin Green. The music competition will be held in Bulgaria next year because the Bulgarian singer Good with the song “Bangaranga” won the ESC 2026 in Vienna in May.

Canada is now a full member of the EBU

Last week, the European Broadcasting Union, an association of broadcasters from dozens of countries primarily in Europe, announced that CBC/Radio-Canada had become a full member – thereby fulfilling the requirements for participation in the competition.

The timing of the announcement of Canada’s participation in the ESC in 2027 should by no means be chosen by chance: The 1 July is there National holiday.

Canada’s participation in the world’s largest music competition will allow “Canadian talent to be showcased on one of the most famous music stages in the world,” said CBC/Radio Canada’s broadcaster Marie-Philippe Bouchard.

By the way, the country with the maple leaf on its flag already has an ESC winner: Celine Dion won the contest in 1988 – although the Canadian competed for Switzerland at the time. The song she performed „Don’t leave without me“ is, by the way, the last winning title to date that was sung in French.
