La Jornada: Nature, a constant in Kahlo’s life, will be the focus of July, Frida’s month

It all happened in July. Seven days after turning 47, the painter Frida Kahlo died due to health problems. She died on July 13 in the same house where she was born, on the 6th of the same month, 1907, and on July 3, 1958, it opened its doors as the Frida Kahlo Museum, which protects her memory and her world. These three events will be commemorated, like every year, in the popular cultural space.

For the 2026 edition of July, the month of Frida, The programming revolves around a look at nature as a constant presence in your life, home and work. In the Blue House this relationship can be recognized in one of its most vivid spaces: the garden.

Blue House Gardens, Arizona

It is so special that the Frida Kahlo Museum has had a project for four years through which it is reproduced in other botanical gardens. He has already been to San Antonio, Texas, and Naples, Florida. Last October, the Tucson Botanical Gardens, in Arizona, welcomed the idea. In each place it has assumed different characteristics, given the climatic differences and the available flora. In Tucson it was decided to combine the specimens from the Blue House with those native to southern Arizona.

More than an outdoor space, the garden was part of the intimate experience of the house. From the green door that connects the bedroom with the outside, the visitor discovers a domestic landscape made up of trees, volcanic stone walls, its pre-Hispanic-inspired pyramid, its toad pond, the insignia “Frida and Diego lived in this house 1929-1954”, planters, pots, flowers and shadows.

This closeness to nature also appears in Kahlo’s work. In his still lifes and still lifes, fruits, flowers, roots, leaves, animals and objects are not only represented as elements of the environment, but as presences loaded with color, shape and meaning.

July, the month of Frida It will include classes, conferences, concerts, workshops for all ages and tours. Among the conferences stands out Global Frida: A look about the exhibition Frida: The Making of An Icon at Tate Modern, in London, which on July 9, at 12 noon, prior registration, will be taught by its curator Tobías Ostrander. Before its opening, on June 25, more than 41 thousand tickets had already been sold in advance, a historic figure for the museum.

In the talk, Ostrander will address the conception and research process that shaped the exhibition, while reflecting on the phenomenon of freedom mania, and will analyze the way in which the figure of Kahlo has been historically constructed to become one of the most recognized cultural icons worldwide today.

On Saturday the 18th at 11 a.m. there will be a walking tour of Frida’s Coyoacán, since the neighborhood is also part of the artist’s history.
