On the centenary of the birth of the writer Sergio Galindo, which marks today, the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) will hold three conversations in Xalapa, a film series, the presentation of a reissue of his narrative work and a photographic exhibition People from then 1957-1967in order to bring new generations closer to the legacy of the Veracruz author.
“Galindo was always concerned about giving a space to young writers. So these activities are designed above all to bring them closer to the work of this writer, recognized as one of the most important of the 20th century in Mexico and Latin America,” said Agustín del Moral Tejeda, general director of Editorial UV, in an interview with The Day.
Today’s activities begin with the conversation Sergio Galindo, the man of the booksat 10 a.m., in which José Luis Martínez Morales, specialist in the work of the short story writer and novelist, will participate; Teresa García Díaz, UV researcher, and Daniel Hurtado, scholar of Galindo’s work.
The dialogue is scheduled at 11 a.m. Sergio Galindo, decentralizer and promoter of literaturewith the participation of Mario Muñoz, director of the magazine The Word and the Man; José Ángel Fernández, researcher at the Institute of Linguistic-Literary Research of the UV, and Guadalupe Flores, teacher at the Faculty of Letters.
The third conversation Sergio Galindo seen by the students, It is at 12 noon, and will feature the participation of Naomi Gómez Jiménez, Leslie Ortiz Libreros, Andrés Martínez García and Edson David Carballo Estudillo.
“These dialogues address the different facets of Galindo, from his work as a creator, his role as founder of the UV Publishing House from Xalapa, and his role as a promoter of literature,” said Del Moral Tejeda.
In the Blue Humanities room, where the three conversations take place, there is also a book sale that includes copies of the reissue of the writer’s narrative collection, among these Otilia Rauda, January Justice, Rice Powders y The two angels and the mushroom man.
The celebration includes the opening of the exhibition People of then, 1957-1967a photographic series by Francisco Beverido Perau (1917-1997) curated by Ángel José Fernández and Alberto Tovalín. The exhibition is presented at the Casa del Lago UV and brings together images of personalities who marked the cultural and editorial life of the institution during that decade, among whom are Galindo himself and Juan Vicente Melo.
“Some of these portraits were included in the book Universidad Veracruzana, 70 years: An iconographybut other images had never been published. It is a rescue from the Beverido Perau archive,” explained Tovalín.
The organizers also announced the film series Sergio Galindo in the cinemawhich includes the presentation of The mushroom lordby Roberto Gavaldón, and The tripby Jaime García Ascot, in which Galindo participated as a scriptwriter, as well as Otilia Rauda, the woman of the peopleby Dana Rotberg, based on the author’s novel of the same name. The films will be projected in the Clavijero classroom.
These activities seek to ensure that “rereading Sergio Galindo is not only an exercise in literary nostalgia, but a way of understanding a key stage of Mexican literature,” concluded Del Moral Tejeda.
