Director Guy Ritchie still hasn't gotten over his snotty humor – Culture

The Gentlemen series is based on Ritchie’s film of the same name, from which only the basic idea has remained in the series.

British mansions uncovering the rot and fakeness hidden inside the walls seems to be the TV themes this winter. The sounding of these started already in December with Prime Video’s satirical gloom Saltburnfrom the movie and now continues even more lushly in Netflix’s gangster drama series The Gentlemen.

A blistering eight-part series follows by Theo James played by Edward Horniman, a scoundrel from an aristocratic family, who, to the dismay of his older brother, who is involved in gambling and cocaine, inherits the 600-year-old family manor and the duke’s nobility under his nose. A large cannabis factory dug underground is revealed under the fields.

Soon Eddie is involved in illegal activities himself.

U The slightly witty style of the series, which prickly collides with the working-class world of murders and gangsters, is familiar to its creator, the British director Guy Ritchien of early blockbusters Wood, hay and a few water bodies (1998) and Snatch – profanities (2000).

The story is basically based on Ritchie’s novel of the same name The Gentlemen -film (2019), of which only the basic idea has survived.

The rhythm is also more leisurely than Ritchie’s films.

On the other hand, it’s refreshing to see Ritchie’s work’s familiar snobbery pushed to the side even a little.

The series is based on the movie The Gentlemen, in which Michelle Dockery and Matthew McConaughey were seen as a couple running a cannabis business.

Also the backgrounds of the characters have been diversified: Skinsbecause of the series So Scodelarion at least from the beginning, Susan Glass, played by the clever cannabis guy, seems to be the sharpest type of the entire series instead of the men.

The director has not completely gotten rid of his snotty humor. One example is the main character’s last name: Horniman is a translation of the words “horny man”, which means a horny man.
