Urtasun affirms that one of his priorities is “to protect Catalan” and regrets that young people use it less

The Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun has stated that one of the priorities that the Ministry has is “protect Catalan”and has expressed concern about the decline in social use which ensures that it passes through the tongue.

In statements this Tuesday at the stand of Saint George of the Commons, has regretted that Catalan “among young people between 18 and 34 years old, it is only used regularly by one in four young people”, which is why he has defended its promotion.

He highlighted that the Ministry has opened calls for support for literary creation in the official languages ​​of the State and in the statutory ones, and has also recalled that it has agreed with the Minister of Culture of the Generalitat, Natlia Garriga, the creation of “a group of shared work between the State and Generalitat for the promotion of creation in Catalan”.

Urtasun has also highlighted that in September 2025 a world summit will be held in Barcelona that will bring together 150 ministers of culture from around the world: “It will be a great meeting and we have managed to agree with UNESCO that Catalan will be the language of use”, after which has insisted that the Ministry is completely dedicated – he said verbatim – to the promotion of Catalan.

He also assured that Sant Jordi shows that Catalonia is “a country of culture”and has celebrated that more and more is being read, according to the reading data that he recently presented in Congress.
