Ebola epidemic: WHO assembles emergency committee

The World Health Organization will hold an emergency committee meeting on May 19 to discuss measures to combat the Ebola outbreak. The head of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the speed of the spread of the epidemic is of significant concern.

According to WHO, 131 people have died as a result of the disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and more than 500 cases of infection have been recorded. At least one other person has died in Uganda. At the same time, experts warn: many cases remain undetected, and there may be twice as many sick people.

It is noted that Ebola poses a particular danger to medical personnel who are in direct contact with patients. Among the infected is an American doctor who worked in the DRC; he was evacuated to Germany.
