5 mistakes when using computers that make your eyes tired quickly

Placing the screen too close, working continuously without a break, blinking rarely or wearing glasses at the wrong angle are common habits that cause quick eye fatigue when using a computer.

Working in front of a computer for many hours continuously can cause dry eyes, fatigue, blurred vision and headaches. However, not only screen time but many seemingly harmless habits during work also contribute to eye strain.

Placing the screen too close or too high

Many people have the habit of sitting close to the screen or placing the computer at eye level. This causes the eyes to have to adjust more and increases the feeling of fatigue after many hours of work.

You should place the screen about 50-70 cm away from your eyes (approximately one arm’s length), and keep the top edge of the screen slightly below eye level. A slightly downward viewing angle helps the eyes and neck relax more, reducing pressure on the regulatory muscles.

Working continuously for many hours without breaks

One of the common causes of screen vision syndrome is looking at the screen for too long without resting your eyes.

Experts recommend applying the 20-20-20 rule: for every 20 minutes of work, look at an object about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. If you have to use the computer continuously for about two hours, you should spend about 15 minutes away from the screen to help your eyes relax and re-regulate.

Let the screen be too bright or too bright

Light reflected from windows or lights in the room onto electronic device screens causes the eyes to constantly adjust to see content clearly, thereby increasing the feeling of eye strain.

You should arrange a place for your computer to avoid direct sunlight, use curtains when necessary and adjust the brightness and contrast so that it is close to the brightness of the surrounding environment. If the text is too small, increase the font size instead of squinting to read.

Skip blinking

When concentrating on reading documents or handling work, the frequency of blinking often decreases significantly. This causes tears to evaporate faster, causing dry, burning, scratchy or watery eyes. You should blink fully while working. If you often have dry eyes, you can talk to your doctor about the appropriate use of artificial tears.

Use glasses of the wrong size when working

Wearing glasses with inappropriate measurements or uncorrected refractive errors causes the eyes to have to adjust more to see the computer screen clearly, increasing the risk of headaches and eye strain.

If you often have blurred vision, have to squint, or feel uncomfortable when working on the computer even after resting, you should have an eye exam to check your vision and adjust your glasses if necessary.

Most cases of screen-related eye strain can be improved with simple changes such as adjusting screen distance and position, taking regular eye breaks, blinking frequently, limiting glare, keeping the work environment moist, and having regular eye exams. These habits not only help your eyes feel more comfortable during the working day but also contribute to protecting your eyesight in the long term.
